CROWN FINE ARTS MAKES A CALCULATING MOVE

Crown Fine Arts in London Relocates the World's First Calculating Machine

LONDON, Dec. 9, 2008—Crown Fine Arts, a fine arts transportation company with operations in over 200 locations worldwide, was responsible for moving the world's first calculating machine from its home at Chevening House in Kent, for the first time, for exhibit at the Winter Fine Art & Antiques Fair at Olympia.

"The Earl's Machine," considered a forerunner of today's computer, was displayed for the duration of the fair, from November 10-16, 2008, along with a Thomas Gainsborough portrait of its inventor, Earl Stanhope.

Mick Byrne, Fine Arts manager, Crown UK, commented: "Crown Fine Arts makes the transportation of fine works trouble-free, so they can be shared around the globe. For Crown, this was a momentous move because it was the first time that the calculator ever left the house since the third Earl's death in 1816."

The machine was invented by the extraordinary and colorful Charles Stanhope (1753-1816) and made available for the fair, courtesy of the Trustees of the Chevening Estate.

Earl Stanhope's "arithmetical machine" solved problems in multiplication and division by the revolution of a small winch. It was the world's first machine to tackle the tens-carry mechanism and is a marvel of eighteenth century ingenuity.

The machine was transported in a Crown custom-built crate and the process required two handlers for approximately two hours, in a climate-controlled vehicle.

It was estimated that 22,000 visitors would attend the fair and view the exhibit.
