Biennale di Venezia 2011

The 54th International Art Exhibition runs from July 4th to November 27th, 2011. With over 150,000 visitors to-date, the exhibition currently features 83 artists from 90 nations . The list includes artists from Andorra, Australia, Bulgaria, UAE, Thailand, Turkey, the US and many more. This year, for the very first time, Haiti participated with its Death and Fertility theme. Crown Fine Arts is a proud sponsor of the Haiti pavilion at this event. Italy's Crown Fine Arts team managed the packing of the artworks in Haiti, transported them by plane as well as road and sea to Venice, and finally unpacked and assisted in the displaying of the artworks at the pavilion in the Biennale exhibition area.

The Death and Fertility exhibit presents the artworks of three contemporary artists, Jean Hérard Celeur, André Eugène, and Claude Saintilus of the famous Grand Rue Sculptors group from Port-au-Prince. It focuses on Gede, the family of spirits, which in the Vodou religion, embody both death and fertility. Leah Gordon, the adjunct curator of the exhibit, stated, "This is the newest art community to have emerged in the last ten years in a downtown slum neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The ‘Grand Rue Sculptors' have produced art that reflects a heightened, Gibsonesque, Lo-Sci-Fi, dystopian view of their society, culture and religion. Jean Hérard Celeur and André Eugene are at the core of the movement. Their work has opened entirely new vistas into the creative possibilities of the Vodou-inspired arts of Haiti."
