TEFAF Maastricht: The 17th time’s a charm

February 27, 2018
Marvin Rot packs up delftware to be displayed by Aronson Antiquars of Amsterdam at TEFAFMarvin Rot, Art Packer for Crown Fine Art Amsterdam, is celebrating his 17th anniversary in the global art logistics industry with his 17th visit to TEFAF Maastricht. Exploring the beautiful artwork before the show opens each year is just one of the highlights of his career.

This year, Marvin’s expertise in packing and installation will be put to use in exhibiting the Dutch Delftware of Aronson Antiquars of Amsterdam. The family-owned antique business has been operating for five generations, bringing the world’s finest delftware to private collectors, museums and corporate curators around the world. “I’ve worked with Aronson for the past five years and every time I see their newest collection for TEFAF Maastricht, I’m newly astounded. It’s quite the honor to work with such precious examples of Dutch history.”

Precious cargo is nothing new to Marvin. Plenty of priceless Dutch masterworks have passed through his steady hands over the years. “I think the most interesting art move I’ve ever done is still the ‘Nightwatch’ by Rembrandt,” he says, adding, “‘Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh and ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ by Johannes Vermeer were quite impressive too!” While it would be an privilege for anyone to work with such treasures, it’s particularly special for Marvin as the Dutch masters are among his favorite works of art.

In fact, one of Marvin’s most loved destinations is the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, which has an extensive collection of Dutch masters. Part of this collection is currently on display in the Hermitage, Amsterdam. Elsewhere in Amsterdam, Marvin would recommend visiting the Stedelijk Museum, where the permanent collection celebrates highlights in art and design from 1880 to the present day or the Van Gough Museum, the rightful home of the artist’s famous ‘Sunflowers’ painting.

However, Marvin’s career has taken him far beyond his native Holland. “It’s hard to tell what the most interesting place I’ve travelled to is because I’ve seen so much,” he says. Pushed to pick out some examples, he settles on the Vatican and private collections in the South of France, near Monaco.
