Tsar Peter the Great not only gave his name to this city, but also left it one of the most important collections.

In this collection pieces from the most important artists in Europe are brought together during his lifetime. His interest in science being displayed in other parts of this collection. Today his collection is displayed in the Hermitage.

But there is lots more to see: the city counts more than 200 museums!  The city is often named the most western city of Russia. Its city centre is listed as an UNESCO world heritage site.
